A Book of History—Old Testament

Author: Possibly Samuel

When It Happened: About 1150–1140 BC

Chapters: 4

Key People: Ruth, Naomi, Boaz

Summary: This is the account of Ruth, whose love and commitment to the one true God of Israel led her to travel with her mother-in-law, Naomi, to a foreign land. God rewarded Ruth for her faith when He provided a husband for her and provision for Naomi through Boaz, a close relative. Boaz is often referred to as the “kinsman-redeemer” and points to Christ who redeems lost sinners. Ruth and Boaz became the great-grandparents of King David—and that same family would one day lead to Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah.

About God: God is sovereign in all things, and His purpose will be accomplished.
