A Book of Poetry—Old Testament

Author: Solomon

When It Happened: About 980 BC

Chapters: 12

Key People: Solomon

Summary: In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon, the king of great wisdom and wealth, revealed that the things of the world are empty, hollow, and without meaning. Seeking happiness from “things” is a waste of time. Some of the earthly pleasures Solomon addressed are mirth, alcohol, buildings, property, luxury, youth, wealth, earthly wisdom, greed, and religion. Solomon’s conclusion was that it is only through faith in God that one can achieve wisdom, meaning, and true happiness in this life. All else is vanity because it cannot satisfy.

About God: God promises joy to all who obey His commandments and fear Him more than earthly, temporary pleasures.
