Does the Bible Talk About Dinosaurs?

May 16, 2025

Hi! Welcome back to the Kids Answers magazine blog, where we answer your big questions about God’s Word and God’s world.

Does the Bible talk about dinosaurs? Well, the word dinosaur never appears in the Bible, but many biblical scholars believe the famous creatures are described many times. Look at these verses from Job, for example:

Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox. Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron. (Job 40:15–18)

Some study Bibles have notes stating that Behemoth was a large animal like an elephant or a hippo. But if you’ve ever seen pictures of these creatures, you probably know that neither have a “tail stiff like a cedar.” Instead, the description in these verses fits well with a dinosaur like Brachiosaurus.

In older translations of the Bible, a Hebrew word that means “dragon” appears many times throughout the Old Testament. Creation scientists believe that dinos were called dragons before the word dinosaur was invented in the 1800s.

So even though the word dinosaur isn’t in the Bible, God certainly made these amazing beasts during the sixth day of creation week with all the other land animals.
