For a sandcastle to be strong, you need the perfect ingredients: sand, water—and something else. Surface tension!
Surface tension is a force that attracts water molecules to each other. In a sandcastle, water molecules coat the grains of sand and hold them together like glue. When you’re building a sandcastle, you need just the right amount of water. Too little and your castle will crumble. Too much and your castle will collapse.
Psalm 139:17–18 says,
“How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand.”
When you build a sandcastle, remember that the God who created the gigantic ocean and every grain of sand thinks about you!
How to build a sturdy sandcastle
- Make a large pile of sand and soak it with water.
- Fill a bucket with dry sand.
- Add water to the bucket and stir to mix the water and sand together.
- On top of your wet sand pile, flip the bucket upside down.
- Repeat these steps with smaller and smaller buckets to create your sandcastle.
TIP: Use a shovel, spatula, or stick to carve windows, doors, and other features into your castle. Decorate it with shells and other items you collect from the beach.
