Ring of Fire

During the Flood, the Earth's crust broke up into pieces, and many volcanoes arose at the edge of those pieces. The red line represents the "Ring of Fire."

The biggest volcano on earth, Tamu Massif, is the same size as the state of New Mexico! It was not discovered until 2013 because it is deep under the Pacific Ocean.

The biggest volcano in our solar system is Olympus Mons on Mars—17 miles (27 km) high and over 320 miles (515 km) wide.

Hawaii is the only U.S. state that is getting larger, thanks to lava flows.

Most lava flows no more than 5 miles (8 km) per hour, so you would have time to walk or jog to safety.

The word magma describes the hot rock while it is still in the ground, but it is called lava once it flows out of the ground.

When lava pours out of volcanoes into the ocean, it can produce spectacular explosions, called tephra jets. The hot lava transforms seawater to steam, and blasts lava fragments and rocks into the air. This lava flows down from the volcano to the sea through unseen lava tubes—tunnels under fields of hardened lava which flowed earlier.
