Your Handwriting Is like a Fingerprint!
by Dr. Jennifer Hall Rivera on Jan 06, 2026
Did you know that your handwriting is as unique as your fingerprints and DNA?
This is another amazing gift from God, and the Apostle Paul knew this as well. He states in 2 Thessalonians 3:17, “I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write.” Paul assured the people in Thessalonica that his letter was genuine, as they should have recognized the style of writing he used and compared it to his other letters for authenticity.
To help solve crimes, forensic handwriting experts examine evidence written by people.
The Secret Ingredients of Handwriting
A famous criminologist stated, “The unconscious handwriting of two different individuals can never be identical.”1 This means that no two people will ever write the same. So what are analysts looking for in handwriting evidence? They are looking for several characteristics that make your handwriting one of a kind. Here are a few examples:
-
How do you slant your letters and words?
-
Do you slope your words or write straight?
-
How do you form your letters (such as crossing your t’s and dotting your i’s)?
-
How large do you write your letters (do you stay in the line)?
-
How much space do you leave between words?
How Experts Crack the Handwriting Code
Forensic handwriting examiners compare written evidence with known writing samples to identify authors. Any piece of written or printed material used in an investigation is called a questioned document—this could be a ransom note, a forged signature, a threatening letter, or even a diary entry.
The examiner’s job is to compare the handwriting on this evidence to writing samples from potential suspects. Using specialized magnification tools, they analyze patterns in the loops on letters, the dots on i’s and j’s, the slant of the writing, and even subtle details like pen pressure and writing speed. When they find matching characteristics, examiners mark these similarities using a standardized system, building a case for whether the same person wrote both documents.
Handwriting Experts: Pursuing Justice Through God-Given Gifts
Our God is a just God. Deuteronomy 32:4 declares, “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.” In a world scarred by sin and deception, God has equipped people with different gifts and talents to pursue justice and serve others—including forensic handwriting experts.
These specialists use their skills to uncover truth in several ways:
- Detecting forgeries on checks and contracts
- Identifying alterations to original documents
- Solving criminal cases through analysis of ransom notes and threatening letters
- Determining the type of ink and paper used
- Verifying the authenticity of historical documents like diaries and ancient manuscripts
God Knows Everything—Even Your Handwriting
Our God loves his creation, and he pays attention to every little detail about you . . . even the way you form your letters. Your handwriting is uniquely yours, reflecting God’s creative design. Whether you’re writing an essay or a note to a friend, remember that the distinctive way you write is part of how God made you special.
