You Could Work in Tech

by Crissa Esse on Dec 15, 2025

Adults interested in your future work dreams have probably asked you, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” Maybe you’ve felt confident in your answer since you were three, but you’re probably still figuring it out.

No matter your skills and passions, there may be a technology-related job that will spark your interest. We’ll check out several types of tech jobs, but first, let’s explore three truths about work.

Fun fact: It is estimated that in the US, 438,000 technology job openings were posted in 2024.1

1. Work Is Good

In the beginning (Genesis 1:1), God created the sun, the moon, planets, trees, flowers, animals, and bugs! The same week, God also created the first two people: Adam and Eve. He created humans in his own image and gave them rule over the animals.

Genesis 1:27–28 annotated

Have you ever cared for a garden? When God created Adam, he put him in the garden of Eden to take care of it. And one of the first tasks he gave him was to name the animals.

Genesis 2:15, 19 annotated

After God made Adam and Eve, he called his whole creation “very good” (Genesis 1:31). The world he created had no sin, death, or disease.

But did you notice what it did have? Work! Work was part of God’s very good world. In God’s amazing creation, he purposefully and kindly gave Adam and Eve tasks and responsibilities. Humans were created, in part, to work.

2. Work Is Hard

Spoiler alert: Genesis 3 goes on to tell us that God’s world didn’t stay in its very good state. The serpent entered the scene, and he convinced Eve to eat fruit—fruit from the one tree God had told them not to eat from. Then, she handed the fruit to Adam, and he also ate it. Sin entered the world.

Disobeying God has consequences. God tells Adam part of the curse of sin in Genesis 3:17–19. Now, his work of growing food would be hard.

Genesis 3:17–19 annotated

In that moment, God’s gift of work became difficult because of sin. No longer would working for food always be easy, enjoyable, or painless.

Fun fact: One study says that 50% of people consider their job to be enjoyable all or most of the time.2

3. Work Can Be Used for Good

We look forward to the day when God will make a new, perfect heavens and earth that is free from the curse of sin (2 Peter 3:13). All those who trust in Jesus’ death and resurrection for the forgiveness of their sin will live with him forever in that incredible place. For now, we live in a world where both of the above statements are true: Work is a good thing that God created us for, but it is hard in our broken world.

After Jesus died and rose and before he went back up to heaven, he gave his followers a task: Make disciples. In other words, tell people about Jesus and help them obey his commands. This task is often called the great commission.

Matthew 28:18–20 annotated

This is the most important work of all. When most people think of work, they think of their job, the thing they get paid to do. But the great commission is work that can be done in any God-honoring job.3

Depending on the opportunities, desires, and skills that God gives you and you work toward, you could work anywhere from a small Christian nonprofit to a big non-Christian company—and you could work in your hometown or halfway across the world. But no matter what your future brings, ask this: How can I use my job to fulfill the task God has given me to make disciples?

Fun fact: This website for kids has approximately 1.5 MILLION views per year. That’s one example of how many people (like you!) are being taught truth from God’s Word through technology.

Opportunities in Tech

Technology has grown quickly in the past several years, from laptops and Google to smartphones and AI. This rise in digital technology has brought with it amazing new opportunities. It enables us to reach people across the world in seconds, and people with many different skills are needed to make that possible.

Below are examples of the kinds of technology-related jobs you could work one day. Which one most interests you and why? Can you think of any others?

6–7 Types of Technology-Related Jobs

1. The Designers

Students designing
  • Have you ever visited a website that looked sketchy and you couldn’t find what you wanted? That website didn’t have a good design team.
  • Web or app designers can create graphics; choose the colors, shapes, and sizes of buttons; and interact with users to find the best way to organize the material. A job well done means the site looks great and you can find what you want easily.
  • Names for these types of jobs include web designer and UX/UI designer.

2. The Developers

The developers
  • A full, working website or app doesn’t just appear—someone has to build it.
  • Developers use their skills to plan and execute solutions when needs arise. They often write the codes that tell the browser or operating system what to look like and what to do when users perform certain actions (such as pressing a button).
  • Names for these types of jobs include full-stack developer and software engineer.

3. The Administrators

The administrators
  • Especially at workplaces where a lot of technology is used, administrators are needed to set things up and keep them updated.
  • They are in charge of making sure all technology is set up and working properly. They install new equipment and manage user accounts, and they run tests and fix issues.
  • Names for these types of jobs include systems administrator and network administrator.

4. The Problem Solvers

The problem solvers
  • If your laptop’s speaker isn’t working, the printer keeps giving you an error message, or you can’t log on to your account, you might call your organization’s help desk.
  • These people use their knowledge to help you figure out the steps you need to take to get things working properly again.
  • Names for these types of jobs include help desk technician and support specialist.

5. The Creators

The creators
  • People and companies have stories that they want to get out into the world using technology, and many skills are needed to tell those stories well.
  • Those who create content for websites and apps may film and edit videos, record music, design charts, or write ad scripts.
  • Names for these types of jobs include video editor, content writer, and digital communication strategist.

6. The Guards

The guards
  • Sadly, in a fallen world, some people try to steal other’s private information (like passwords or bank account numbers) that exist online. Someone needs to work to stop them.
  • These people work to build and improve systems that tighten up online security. They also keep alert for threats and notify the necessary people when threats occur.
  • Names for these types of jobs include cybersecurity engineer and information security analyst.

Bonus (7): The Teachers

The teachers
  • It’s important to document how new technology works and what solutions already exist to fix problems that older technology has.
  • These people first learn from technology specialists. Then, they use what they learn to write and present instructions in a way that others can easily learn from and reference when needed.
  • Names for these types of jobs include technical writer and instructional designer.

One day, working a technology-related job like these could allow you to use your talents and interests in the workplace. And whether publishing truth from God’s Word or sharing the gospel with your coworkers, you can use your future job to obey the great commission.
