One of our readers, Isabella (age 10), recently asked,

“What are the signs of the zodiac?”

The zodiac is an area in the sky that stretches around the earth like a belt. This belt is divided into 12 parts, or “signs.” Each of these 12 parts is named after a constellation (a group of stars). People who believe in astrology (uh-STROL-uh-jee) believe these 12 zodiac signs tell them something about their personality or future.

Astronomy Versus Astrology

Astronomy is the scientific study of the heavens.

Astrology goes beyond science and tries to connect the universe to a person’s personality, mood, and future.

Taking personality tests may seem fun and harmless, but your parents should help you with them because many are not based on biblical principles. Remember that as Christians, we are no longer slaves to our sin nature (so we shouldn’t use our “personality type” to excuse bad behavior), and we have the Holy Spirit to help us with the goal to become more like Christ—which is ideal for any personality type!

Also keep in mind that the Bible specifically warns us to stay away from astrology. In Isaiah 47:13–14, God names astrologers as being people who will be destroyed in God’s coming judgment. Based on Deuteronomy 18:10–14, astrology should be off-limits for God’s children.

A Biblical Purpose for Stars

The Bible is clear that the stars, sun, and moon were created on day four of creation week (Genesis 1:14) for “signs and seasons.” God provided them to help us keep time. But God’s Word does not describe any mystical meaning for the stars.

While the stars don’t determine your personality or destiny, they do showcase God’s power and majesty! And think of this—the same God who scattered the stars, numbering and naming each one (Psalm 147:4), sees you, knows you, and loves you. You’re special because God is the one who created you and your personality. And only he holds your future in his hands.

Who you are is written in God’s Word, not in the stars.
