Would Pain Exist Without Sin?

Mar 26, 2025

Isaiah M. (age 11) asked,

“If there was not sin, would there still be pain?”

Excellent question, Isaiah!

In a world without sin, there would be no pain. In God’s original creation, everything was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). There was no death, suffering, or pain. But because Adam disobeyed God, the curse of sin now affects our world. Now we experience pain.

Even though pain can be, well, painful, it can also be helpful because it alerts us to danger. If you touch a hot stove and get a painful burn, you’ll likely remember not to touch it next time.

Though our pain reminds us of the sin-cursed world we live in today, we can look forward to the day when Jesus will return and make new heavens and a new earth, where there will no longer be any pain (Revelation 21:4).
