Why Do We Need Discipleship?
Jun 06, 2025
Hi! Welcome back to the Kids Answers magazine blog, where we answer your big questions about God’s Word and God’s world.
Lily H. (age 12) asked,
“Why do we need discipleship?”
That’s a great question, Lily.
Discipleship is the process of helping someone grow in their faith and become more like Jesus. Discipleship can include activities like praying together, doing a Bible study together, and talking about how to live out your faith.
Discipleship is an important part of our Christian faith for several reasons. Jesus discipled his followers, who are called disciples. Jesus’ disciples followed him everywhere, listening to his teaching and learning all they could from him about God.
Another reason discipleship is important is because we are called to be in community with other Christians. Being discipled or discipling someone else is a good way to grow in your faith with them.
Finally, discipleship is important because God calls us to make disciples. Before his ascension back to heaven, Jesus commanded his disciples to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19–20).
