Why Did Jesus Have to Rise from the Dead?

Aug 07, 2025

Elisabet (age 12) asked,

“Why did Jesus have to rise from the dead? Couldn’t he just go straight to heaven to be with God?”

Thanks for your great question, Elisabet.

When God originally created mankind, they were perfect—without sin. But after Adam and Eve disobeyed God, sin and death entered the world. Now we are all born sinners (Romans 3:23). The punishment for our sin is death (Romans 6:23).

But God sent his Son, Jesus, to earth to live a perfect life. When Jesus died on the cross, he took the punishment for our sins. And when he rose again three days later, he demonstrated that he had conquered the grave. By rising from the dead, Jesus showed that he had victory over sin and death forever (1 Corinthians 15:57). Now, anyone who believes in him can have eternal life instead of the death they deserve.
