A cryptid is an animal that has never been proven to exist.

Some cryptids include bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster, which we are pretty sure don’t exist. Other cryptids might have existed once, but scientists believe they are extinct now. Animals like the gorilla, okapi (oh-KAH-pee), and coelacanth (SEE-luh-kanth) used to be cryptids, but have been proven to exist.

Cryptids tell us more about what we know—or don’t know—about the animal world. There are lots of habitats that are hard for humans to explore, especially in the ocean. New technology makes it easier to see previously unexplored places, and we’re discovering many amazing things in God’s creation because of that!
