Isabella P. (age 10) asked,

“Why are siblings so annoying?”

Good question, Isabella!

Because of the fall, we live in a sinful and selfish world. Even as followers of Christ, we are all not immune to sin.

Our sinful nature can drive us to annoy our families for amusement (for fun) and make us easily annoyed. This is a good reminder to have patience with your sibling’s actions and know that the enemy is sin, not your brother or sister.

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. (1 John 4:20)

There are also times when people don’t mean to be annoying, and their irritating behavior might come from excitement or an invitation to play. Regardless, the Lord calls us not to seek revenge but to be forgiving with our brothers and sisters and love them with a tender heart.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:32)

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. (Romans 12:10)

Because of the sin in our hearts and the angry reactions it gives us when we are annoyed, we must rely on the Lord to navigate conflicts with our siblings. Spending time in prayer and reading God’s Word makes it easier to rely on him and have patience in these difficult moments.

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. (Romans 12:12)
