Why Are Boys Different from Girls?

We love hearing from you and answering your questions! Emy K. recently asked,
“Why are boys so different from girls?”
Great question! The short answer is because God created them to be different!
First, let’s look at how boys and girls are the same. Both boys and girls are created in the image of God, which means that God values both boys and girls equally.

Both boys and girls have different interests and gifts, and there are a variety of ways that boys and girls glorify God. Sometimes boys are good at traditionally “feminine” things and girls are good at traditionally “masculine” things. In those cases, it’s important to look at what the Bible says, and if the Bible doesn’t say something should be limited to boys or girls, we shouldn’t either!
That being said, boys and girls do have a lot of differences, and those differences go all the way down to our genetic code—the instructions that tell our bodies how to develop and grow. Boys have XY chromosomes, while girls have XX. This difference might seem tiny, but this genetic difference sets in motion one of two very different developmental pathways. Girls (XX) grow up to be women, and boys (XY) grow up to be men. There are a lot of physical differences between men and women.

One reason men and women are different is so they can support each other in marriage to fulfill God’s purpose for us. God told Adam and Eve to have kids, fill the earth, and take care of the earth. Adam couldn’t do that alone, and neither could Eve—that’s why God created male and female.

In the fallen world, some people think boys are better than girls, or girls are better than boys. But we’re both equally affected by sin, and both need a Savior—Jesus.
