“When was the Bible put together in one book?”
Thanks for your question!
The Bible was written over a long period of time, more than 1,500 years, by about 40 different authors.
The books of the Old Testament were recognized as God’s Word by the Jewish people long before Jesus came to earth as a man. The New Testament books were written in the first century AD and were accepted by the early church as God’s Word.
By the fourth century AD, the church had recognized which books were God’s Word. These are the same books that we now call the Bible! But at this time, the books were written on individual scrolls and were not yet put together into one book.
The oldest copies of the whole Bible in one book that we still have today were copied during the fourth century. Several Greek manuscripts are from the fourth century, and the two most famous ones are called Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus. Others may have been made earlier, but wore out from use or age.
The first English Bible was translated and published in 1382 by John Wycliffe. This English Bible was copied by hand since the printing press hadn’t been invented yet. The first printed complete English Bible was published by Myles Coverdale in 1535, nine years after Tyndale published the first printed New Testament.
