What Is Cloning?

Jun 25, 2025

Rosalia (age 9) asked,

“What is cloning?”

Thanks for your question, Rosalia!

Cloning is making an identical copy of a gene, cell, or organism. We usually think of cloning as something scientists do in a laboratory, but cloning happens by itself in nature. Certain bacteria and some plants reproduce when one cell splits, creating a copy of a cell that has the exact same genes as the cell it came from.

Did you know identical twins are technically considered clones? Identical twins happen from the splitting of one fertilized egg inside the mother.

Some people think we should clone humans so that we have identical copies of cells, tissues, and organs for the parent (original) human to have if they are ever needed. But people are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Cloning humans violates the sanctity of life.

Do you have a question about God’s Word or his world? Ask your parents to help you submit your question here. We’d love to hear from you!
