Digital Detective: Uncovering Truth in the Tech World
by Dr. Jennifer Hall Rivera on Jan 28, 2026
A church’s online savings account has been hacked, and thousands of dollars were transferred to an unknown bank account. How do the police investigate this type of computer crime?
When there is no tangible evidence, it can be challenging. But did you know that every transaction, every email, every text, every photo, and every social media post leaves a digital “fingerprint”? In this type of case, digital detectives will be called in to investigate digital traces for clues.
This type of investigation is only possible because our God values truth and justice. He created humans with the ability and resources to track down online criminals and hold people accountable for their digital crimes.
What Is Digital Forensics?
It was not until computers became a common business tool in the mid-1980s that the field of digital forensics began. This is the time when computer crime became a new problem for law enforcement. Digital forensics is a field of forensic science focused on the search, preservation, and analysis of information on computer systems. This includes investigating hard drives, thumb drives, CDs, DVDs, external drives, deleted files, encrypted files, emails, chats, social media, digital bookmarks, and so much more.
What Can You Do as a Digital Forensics Expert?
Digital forensic experts recover deleted files and passwords, track online search activity, search for hidden storage space on a computer, and solve cybercrimes using special tools. Some of these Computer Forensic Tools (CFTs) are special software and computers. Even when a person tries to delete files, digital photos, and text messages, traces of that information remain and are retrievable. Digital detectives will also testify as experts in court.
Conclusion
The field of digital forensics is one of the fastest-growing areas in law enforcement. If you love working on computers, solving puzzles, and cracking codes to bring justice to those who are hurting, then digital forensics might be the career for you. Honesty, integrity, and excellence are all biblical traits that should reflect a follower of Christ. Even within the digital world, a person can give glory to the creator of knowledge, and the one who is knowledge, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

How Can You Stay Safe in the Digital World?
The number one layer for safety online is you! If you are careful online (including following security measures like changing your password and keeping it secret, and avoiding suspicious websites), you can reduce the chance of becoming a victim of computer crime.
Remember, nothing is ever deleted! Everything online leaves traces of your identity, location, and personal information. This is why you need to be careful whenever posting selfies and other details on social media. Make wise choices and check with your parents before texting, posting, or responding to anyone in the online world.
Respect others’ digital property! Don’t ever try to hack, steal data, or invade the digital privacy of someone else. Computer hackers have cost society billions of dollars. This includes using someone else’s research, data, or information as your own. This is called plagiarism. Claiming someone else’s words as your own without giving them credit is unethical and dishonest and, in extreme cases, a crime.
Be a light of truth in digital spaces! You can use social media and technology to tell others about Jesus. You can post Bible verses, give your testimony, and encourage others to become followers of Christ. Colossians 3:17 reminds us, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Always ask, “Am I honoring God with my online presence?”
