Shadow the Raven
What’s up, kids? My name is Shadow, or Super Strong Shadow as my friends call me. Because I’m a big, black raven, some people think I’m scary, but I’m really not, I mean . . .
Aaaaaaaaah! Get away from me! Get away from me!
Oh, I forgot. That’s just my shadow. That pesky thing follows me around and makes me almost jump out of my feathers at least once a day. Ugh, so embarrassing.
But I’m really glad you’re here, because it’s been a rough day. First, I woke up hungry and saw some delicious-looking meat on the ground. But just as I was going for it, my brother swooped down faster than me and took it for himself. I mean, can you believe that? Then, as I was chasing him, my wing hit a rock on the side of a cliff, and I think I might’ve broken a bone. It’s feeling a little better now, but at first, it hurt so badly, and I was so hungry that I couldn’t help but cry. Loudly. And do you know who first came to see me? The local raven bullies. They laughed at me and called me names. Man, I tried to be brave, but it was tough.
Have you ever had a hard day? Maybe not that many bad things happened, but it still felt hard. Or maybe it was even harder than my day, like when someone you love died. On days like this, you might feel all alone. But you’re not! Even when it seems like dark shadows in life surround you, God is your good shepherd who comforts his children (2 Corinthians 1:3). He has promised to never leave you (Hebrews 13:5).
God made the world perfect, but when Adam sinned, death and suffering entered it. Even animals feel the effects of sin—I mean, just look at my wing. Ouch! But don’t forget: If you’ve placed your faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection and repented of your sin, you have the hope of heaven. No matter how many bad days you have, God has promised that, one day, he will wipe away your tears and “neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore” (Revelation 21:4). Isn’t that super epic!
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)
