Panda Squared
by Inspector Barry Mins on Jul 15, 2025
Hey kids, and welcome back to another “Ask a Baraminologist” feedback article. This week, our question comes from Robyn M. (age 7), who asks,
“Can you cross a panda bear with a red panda?”
Great question, Robyn.
The answer to your question is most likely no. Giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) are a member of the bear family, Ursidae. The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is currently classified in its own family, separate from all other organisms.
The red panda has been difficult to classify, having been considered related to several different organisms. However, it is most likely that these two species are members of separate kinds.
Kinds are the groups of organisms God made in the garden of Eden, which have become multiple species over time. Because the giant panda and the red panda are members of different kinds, they cannot mate and have offspring.
