Is the Moon Just a Big Rock?
Aug 26, 2025
Sam asked,
“Is the moon just a big rock in orbit around the earth?”
Thanks for your question, Sam.
The moon is made up mainly of rock and metal and orbits the earth. But it is so much more than just a big rock! In fact, when God created the moon on day four of creation week, he gave it many special purposes. It is the light that shines at night (Genesis 1:16) and separates light from darkness (Genesis 1:18). It helps distinguish days, months, seasons, and years.
The moon also plays an important role in the earth’s tilt, which regulates our climate and the seasons. Our moon is just the right size to produce the ocean’s tides.
Earth’s moon is just the right size and distance from our planet to make life on earth possible. Only a thoughtful and wise Creator could have put it there!
Did You Know?
