How Does Creation Reflect God?

“How does creation reflect God?”
Great question! Creation can remind us of God’s attributes when we see things that are particularly beautiful or really big. When we see rock layers—especially places like the Grand Canyon, but even in a normal cutout on the side of the road—we can remember that those layers are there because God judged the world with a flood. Here are a few other ways that we can see God’s reflection in creation.
King David was reminded how much bigger God is than we are when he wrote Psalm 8:
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8:3–4)
Jesus used the flowers of the field to remind us that God will always take care of us:
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? (Matthew 6:28–30)
The Bible also says God’s eternal and divine nature is clearly shown in creation (Romans 1:20). What other ways can you think of that creation reminds us of different attributes of God?
One element of creation reflects God more clearly than anything else—us! That’s because God made human beings in his image. That means we are like him in some ways, even though sin distorts the image we were meant to reflect perfectly. When Jesus came as a man to save us, he was the perfect image of God, and he did what no one else could—he died so we could be saved from our sin, and then he was raised on the third day. We can look forward to receiving our own resurrection bodies, which will perfectly reflect God’s image, just like God intended from the beginning!
