Does God Like AI?

We love hearing from you and answering your questions!

Liam W. asked,

“Does God like AI?”

Great question, Liam. AI has emerged as one of the most-talked-about issues of our time, so it’s important to take a biblical perspective on it.

Does the Bible Mention AI?

The Bible does mention Ai, as much as that might surprise you, but it does not mean artificial intelligence. Instead, it refers to a small city in the land of Canaan that Joshua and the Israelites initially fail to take due to Achan’s sin (Joshua 7–8). God has nothing positive to say about the city of Ai, but he says nothing at all about artificial intelligence. So what should we make of artificial intelligence?

Is AI Trustworthy?

First, it’s important to note that the things you are likely thinking of as AI (like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot) are not actual intelligence. Instead, they work by predicting the most likely next word in a sentence. They are not really thinking—they are analyzing millions, or billions, of sentences and predicting the most likely next word or phrase based on context.

Also, because of the way they are made, these so-called AI tools make things up a lot. You could say they hallucinate or lie. Now, they are not moral agents, so they don’t know they aren’t telling the truth, but it’s still true that they make stuff up. One model hallucinates almost 50% of the time.1 So nothing AI models say should be accepted without further research. Even if they provide links to sources, those sources are often also made-up.

God is not a fan of lying, but you cannot blame the models for lying since they are not human. You can, however, not trust anything they say without checking it.

Does God Approve of AI?

AI is a tool, so it can be used for both good and evil. Think of it like a knife. You can use it to cut vegetables or to hurt people. Obviously, how you use it will determine whether God approves or disapproves. It is much the same with AI.

It can be used as a powerful search engine, provided you double-check its output. It can give you ideas for party games, and it can share tips on growing flowers in your garden. But it isn’t trustworthy and sometimes outputs wicked things that God hates. However, the tool is not at fault for the commands given by the user, just like the knife is not responsible for whether it is used to cut peppers or wound people.
