Did Cain Go to Heaven?

We love hearing from you and answering your questions! G (age 15) asks:

“Did Cain go to heaven?”

Thanks for your question! The short answer is that we can’t know whether most people went to heaven unless the Bible specifically tells us, because we don’t know whether God might have had mercy at the last moment of their life and saved them, much like He did the thief on the cross. However, indications are that Cain probably wasn’t saved, and he’s a cautionary tale for us.

First, it looks like Cain presented his offering in Genesis 4 out of obligation rather than genuine devotion to God, and he became very angry instead of repenting when his offering was rejected. When God confronted him about his reaction, instead of being sorry, he went out and killed righteous Abel.

When God confronted Cain about killing Abel, Cain initially lied. He was more concerned about facing justice for his murder than having a good relationship with God. God sentenced him to wander on the face of the earth, but the first thing Cain is recorded doing is building a city—an attempt to get around God’s judgment!

Cain’s descendants only amplified Cain’s rebellious tendencies. His descendant, Lamech, was the first recorded to marry two women, even though God intended marriage to be between one man and one woman. Lamech bragged about his willingness to kill a man and even presumed that God would punish him far more than Cain!

We can’t rule out that Cain might have repented, and the Bible just didn’t record it. But there’s no indication that he did, and Cain is only mentioned in negative ways in the New Testament (Hebrews 11:4; 1 John 3:12; Jude 1:11). So Cain is probably not in heaven, and we should learn from his bad example.
