Are New Stars Forming?

Sep 19, 2025

Iris (age 15) and Johanna (age 15) asked,

“Are new stars forming?”

Thank you for your questions!

The formation of new stars is often discussed and debated by scientists. Some astronomers (scientists who study the universe) claim that new stars are forming, but this has never actually been observed. These scientists’ beliefs come from an evolutionary worldview, not a biblical one. So, let’s look to the Bible to see if we can find an answer.

In Genesis 2:1, we read, “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.” This verse happens about 6,000 years ago on the seventh day of creation week, when God rested. It says that God finished creating everything, which would include all the stars. When we look to the answers found in Genesis, we see that God created the stars on the fourth day of creation and that he finished creating everything on the sixth day.

But we know that some stars have gone supernova (exploded) since creation. If God allowed some stars to “die,” it is also possible (although not probable) that he still allows stars to form. After all, God finished his creation on the sixth day (and rested on the seventh), but we still see new plants sprouting up and new animals and humans being born, so God could allow natural processes to cause star formation.
