A Bit Batty

by Tez Brooks on Oct 01, 2025

Have you ever seen a bat flying around on a summer night? Bats are the only flying mammals. Other mammals, like flying squirrels, can only glide. God created these airborne mammals with skin on their arms and fingers to help them do much more than soar through the sky.

Hold Fruit

Fruit bats use their wings as a basket. While the bats are hanging upside down, their wings help them cradle mangoes or figs without dropping them.

Keep Cool

On a summer day, hanging out in a tree gets hot. By flapping their wings, bats cool their skin and the veins running through their wings.

Getting Grub

Most bats feed off flying insects by catching them in their mouth mid-air.

Shield Their Eyes

Because most bats sleep in the daytime, they find dark, sheltered spots to avoid predators and sunlight. Their wings help shade their eyes during a good long nap.

Stay Dry

During a rainstorm, bats wrap their wings around themselves. Their fur helps repel water to keep them dry.

Cuddle

Baby bats, called pups, need to stay close to their mom. She wraps her wings around them to keep the cold out and the warmth in, making the cuddles comfortable and safe.
